The first Inter-American Indigenous Congress, held at Patzcuaro, Michoacán, Mexico, on 19 April 1940, picked this very date as the American Indian Day. In Brazil, the resolution was enforced by the decree-law nr. 5-540, which was issued back on June 20th, 1943. On 19 April 1953 the Indian Museum was inaugurated in Rio de Janeiro.

Discovery of Brazil will be celebrated on 22nd April and will celebrate the 510 years that went by since the famous Portuguese explorer by the name of Pedro Alvares Cabral discovered the country. The venue for this event is at his monument – Praça Pedro Álvares Cabral – Glória, where there will be held a ceremony in his honor.
