National Samba Day

Monday, December 7, 2009

The idea of having a national samba day was initiated at the end of the I National Congress that took place back in 1962, between November 28 and December 2. A decree was given in order to initiate the national samba day which is considered to be a tribute to various artists and all those people that through the last decades turned the Carnival into one of the most important public events in the entire world. The Carnival is also considered as the largest expression of the Brazilian popular culture.

2 years ago on October 2, 2007, IPHAN – National Artistic Heritage Institute advisory committee voted for the approval of the Carioca samba as cultural heritage of Brazil in its three main forms of expression: “partido alto” samba, backyard samba and samba storylines (plots)”. We could not have discussed about the National Sambay Day without talking about the popular Samba Train which keeps up its tradition, with celebrations on National Samba Day. The Samba Train is about traditional samba groups that take up train compartments with super animated partying from the Central do Brasil station to Oswaldo Cruz.

The National Samba Day is celebrated every year on December 2.
