The Church of Saint Goncalo Garcia and Saint George celebrates St George’s Day with a Mass and a vigil to the saint. As is usual with saint’s days here, there is also a procession and stalls selling food, drink and religious items.

Each year a ceremony marking the anniversary of the Discovery of Brazil in 1500 is held at the monument to Portuguese explorer Pedro Alvares Cabral in Rio de Janeiro’s Largo da Gloria park. Cabral commanded the first group of Europeans to arrive.

Every year, Rio de Janeiro celebrates the rich cultural heritage that stems from the indigenous peoples of Brazil on 19 April, the Dia do Indio (Day of the Indian). Exhibitions, indigenous dance performances and screenings take place at the Museu do Indio.

Rio de Janeiro’s Metropolitan Cathedral is packed during Holy Week, the most important time of the Roman Catholic calendar. There’s a Mass on Maundy Thursday, the Passion of Christ and procession on Good Friday, Easter Vigil on Saturday and Easter Sunday Mass.
