Rio de Janeiro Pride 2011

Rio de Janeiro Pride might not be as big as the Sao Paulo event, but it’s no less of a party. A month of LGBT parties, exhibitions and talks culminates in the Pride Parade from Copacabana on the final day.

The event begins with the Opening Show at Carlos Gomes Theatre and over the next few days, LGBT visitors can attend visual art exhibitions focussing on themes of diversity, strength, a voice and much more.

There are also discussions, movies, a Lesifest, talks on health and human rights, a pre-parade party, the parade itself and the inevitable closing party.

Carnival of Cultures 2011

Venues in Rio de Janeiro’s Copacabana host music, dance, theatre and poetry for the Carnival of Cultures (Carnaval das Culturas). The event takes in art, gastronomy, environment and literary exhibitions before rounding off with a parade along Avenida Atlântica.

Organized between September 23th and October the 7th, the 12th edition of the Rio de Janeiro Film Festival is considered to be the largest and most important event in the movie industry in all Latin America. The show will include short and regular Brazilian films, documentary and fictional films as well as foreign films. It will be held at Cima Centro de Cultura e Informação e Meio Ambiente.

There will be dancing, singing, music, poetry and theatre performances for all participants. The 2 nd Arts Biennial Of The Fine Arts School At The Rio De Janeiro Federal University will bring together paintings, photography, gravures, video, sculptures all focalized on the “Antropofagiando O Criador” (“cannibalizing the Creator”) theme.

The main idea behind this second edition is to make use of the cultural initiative “the Year of France in Brazil” in order for local students to create things departing from neo-classicism, a French movement dating back from the end of the 18th century that was brought to Brazil along with the French Artistic Mission, and that started the development of our country’s own artistic identity. The event will be held from 1-10 th January.

International Humor Festival Of Rio de Janeiro

The second edition of the International Humor Festival of Rio de Janeiro will focus on graphic humor and contemporary theater through exciting drawings and sketches contests as well as theatrical performances. At the Centro Cultural Correios there will be four exhibitions and shows performed by the local famous Paulo and Chico Caruso brothers on 4-6 December. Because 2009 is the French Year in Brazil, it will be the core of such celebrations. France is also important as it had and still has a major influence on the Brazilian culture, especially in graphic arts.

Christmas Festival

It is considered the world’s largest contemporary street art event where architects, designers, creation artists, fashion designers, carnival professionals will present in a very rare way the 50 best natural size nativity scenes which were selected by the UFRJ – Rio de Janeiro Federal University School of Fine Arts. These scenes will be presented at shopping centers, airports, public squares as well as the most popular places in town.

On the last day of the exhibition, these 50 scenes will be auctioned or simply sold. All of the earnings will go to a social welfare project conducted by the exhibiting town or by the State of Rio de Janeiro Social Welfare – Rio Solidário. The “Projeto Vivo” (“Live Nativity Scene”) is an open-air scenic project that will take place at the Christmas Festival. For 2009, it will be the very first time when a scenic project of this caliber will take place in the western region of the country.
