The weeks that precede the 2010 Carnival will be filled with the best parties in the world, live and exciting rehearsals of bands and groups, entertaining samba shows at Terreirão and final repetitions at the samba schools. The sound and lighting tests on the Samba Runway will be directed by the world famous samba school “Acadêmicos do Salgueiro”.

The entrance to the grandstands is open to the large public and “Pagode da Marquês” shall present some of the stars of Brazilian Popular Music at the end of Sunday schedules, on the stage erected in front of section 3. On December 6 the rehearsing of the samba schools from Special and Access Groups will begin, a must-see event.

Christmas is the time when Rio de Janeiro truly lights up as the city is full of lights and colored decorations on the Flamengo Attero, the lights along the seafronts and the cute decorations on the shopping malls. In downtown Rio, the most important cultural centers and churches will open their doors to Christmas carol concerts.

The New Year’s Eve celebration is considered the 2nd largest event in Rio de Janeiro after the Carnival. This year’s show will feature a varied repertoire from the Brazilian Popular Music artists, samba schools and DJ’s that will be performing on the following venues: Flamengo, Copacabana, Ipanema, Barra da Tijuca, Ilha do Governador, Penha, Sepetiba, Pedra de Guaratiba, Paquetá and Parque da Vizinhança de Ramos. Several parties will be organized at various hotels like Hotel Copacabana Palace, Hotel Windsor Excelsior, Hotel Sofitel Rio de Janeiro Copacabana and other. Also, various clubs like Clube Marimbas and Clube Costa Brava will have their own special parties.

It is considered the world’s largest contemporary street art event where architects, designers, creation artists, fashion designers, carnival professionals will present in a very rare way the 50 best natural size nativity scenes which were selected by the UFRJ – Rio de Janeiro Federal University School of Fine Arts. These scenes will be presented at shopping centers, airports, public squares as well as the most popular places in town.

On the last day of the exhibition, these 50 scenes will be auctioned or simply sold. All of the earnings will go to a social welfare project conducted by the exhibiting town or by the State of Rio de Janeiro Social Welfare – Rio Solidário. The “Projeto Vivo” (“Live Nativity Scene”) is an open-air scenic project that will take place at the Christmas Festival. For 2009, it will be the very first time when a scenic project of this caliber will take place in the western region of the country.
