The idea to have a full day of celebrating samba was born at the end of the I National Congress that was organized between November 28th and December 2nd, 1962. It was created by a degree and since then every December 2nd is the National Samba Day in Rio de Janeiro. It is considered to be a tribute to artists and all of those who through the years have turned the Carnival into the most important expression of the Brazilian culture.

In 2007, on October 9th, the IPHAN – National Artistic Heritage Institute advisory comitee voted the approval of the Carioca samba as cultural heritage of Brazil in its three different forms of expression, as follows: “partido alto” samba, backyard samba and samba storylines (plots).

Here, 6 of the best schools of the Special Group will be performing from Sunday to Monday alongside with an unseen fireworks show. This is known as the second best parade of the Rio de Janeiro Carnival. It is a much quieter as well as cheaper manifestation in comparison to the main event which is the Samba Schools in the Special Group.
