Nescau Energy Street Festival Street Skate World Championship

The Nescau Energy Street Festival is the last part of the World Cup Skateboarding (WCS) that will gather 42 skaters from the following countries: Brazil, Belgium, Argentina, Germany and the United States. All of them will show off their skills on a park assembled at the famous Copacabana beach, in street skate and in line roller blades maneuvers.

One of the most important vertical skating idols, Carioca Bob Burnquisthall will try to defy gravity performing the impossible 360º trick. The place for this event is Copacabana beach – next to Av. Princesa Isabel on 22/11/2009, 23/11/2009 and 24/11/2009.

Flag Day

The hymn that glorifies the Brazilian flag was composed by Francisco Braga and the lyrics for the song were written by the famous poet Olavo Bilac. The song was presented for the very first time at the Benjamim Constant School back in 1902 and in that same year Flag Day was established, in promotion of deputy Thomaz Cavalcanti.

It is the symbol of national unity and symbolizes the respect for the Brazilian history as well as the traditions and patriotism of the national heroes that did their best in order to maintain the nation’s integrity and sovereignty.

The venues where Flag Day will be celebrated are Copacabana Fort, the Monument to the Dead of World War 2 and in Brigadeiro Eduardo Gomes Park. Both civil and military ceremonies will be held on all these venues.

Christmas Festival

It is considered the world’s largest contemporary street art event where architects, designers, creation artists, fashion designers, carnival professionals will present in a very rare way the 50 best natural size nativity scenes which were selected by the UFRJ – Rio de Janeiro Federal University School of Fine Arts. These scenes will be presented at shopping centers, airports, public squares as well as the most popular places in town.

On the last day of the exhibition, these 50 scenes will be auctioned or simply sold. All of the earnings will go to a social welfare project conducted by the exhibiting town or by the State of Rio de Janeiro Social Welfare – Rio Solidário. The “Projeto Vivo” (“Live Nativity Scene”) is an open-air scenic project that will take place at the Christmas Festival. For 2009, it will be the very first time when a scenic project of this caliber will take place in the western region of the country.

River Festival

The River Festival, which this year will reach the 11th edition, is the largest film festival in all Latin America. Here short, documentaries and national feature films will be exhibited to the delight of the public. This a very competitive show, which brings together short films, national feature, films as well as documentaries. The winner of this event will go home with the Redentor trophy.

The locations in which this important cinema event will take place is Cine Odeon BR – Praça Municipal Theater and will have more than 30 exhibition spaces, including tarpaulins and cultural spaces; Hi Future – Rua São Clemente, 63 – level 7.The awards that are going to be given at this 11th edition of the River Film Festival are:

International Short Film Festival Rio de Janeiro

The International Short Film Festival 2009 is a very competitive festival for movies made in 35mm, 16mm and digital media. The event has reached the 19th edition in 2009 and it promises to be a very good show for film fanatics. Over the past ten years, the Rio de Janeiro International Film Festival has stamped itself as being the largest film festival in Brazil and in the entire Latin American continent. Each year, approximately 400 films are screened in over 30 theaters around Rio, attracting more than 250,000 spectators.

The festival serves as the world’s major showcase for contemporary Brazilian cinema, with its prestigious competitive Premiere Brasil section featuring drama, documentaries and short films, all vying for the Troféu Redentor award.

An international section presenting about 300 films offers the best in current film-making from around the world, all movies being divided into 12 non-competitive thematic programs. Programs include the Panorama of World Cinema, the Premiere Latina section, and the Focus section, which selects a country each year that will pay tribute to its national cinema; but also to strengthen the commercial ties with Brazil.

Hi Fashion Rocks

A very popular social event in October is Hi Fashion Rocks. This is the Latin American edition and Rio de Janeiro was chosen instead of other important cities like Shanghai, Dubai and Mumbai. This shows that Rio is considered a very important location in Latin America. The event will feature four important international designers while parading with four major international brands and here we mention the well-known brand Marc Jacobs, the glamorous Versace, Givenchy and CK. Mariah Carey will also be present at the event so all the ingredients for a great show are here.

The entire event will occupy no more than 10.200 m2 of the Jockey Club and will be the home for about 5,000 people in just 2 hours of show. A part of the money from the tickets sold will go to charity, just like in other countries in which the Hi Fashion Rocks event is organized.

Festival De Teatro Do Rio

An important event that will celebrate the theater life will be Festival De Teatro Do Rio, which will encourage the popularization of the theater and will display numerous theater acts, debates, workshops and a show that will be staged along with discussions with the cast members.

The most important event for Rio de Janeiro in October is definitely the 20 years of activity celebration of the Centro Cultural Banco Do Brazil. For this special event, CCBB Rio will hold a series of events in this location, as a sample of the quality that they have been providing to the large public for the last two decades. The starts of this celebration will be the movie industry, music art and the theater life, each of them will have some of the most representative artists in their domain. For example, for the movie domain, CCBB Rio will celebrate director Rainer Fassbinder and will show the epic “Alexanderplatz” which consists of 15 movies and a whopping 14 hours of footage.

As far as the theater is concerned, an exhibition will bring close together performances of famous Brazilian companies that for 20 years had many shows; some of these companies are Teatro Autônomo, Amok, Cia dos Atores, Grupo Galpão, Sobrevento and Armazém Cia. de Teatro.

The CCB event will also celebrate the actor Sergio Brtito for his lifetime dedication to the theater. For the music part, a series of shows will bring together numerous well-known national artists like Nina Becker, Marina La Riva, Silvia Machete, Rodrigo Maranhão, Finno Collective and Mariana Aydar. At the CCB show, Paulinho da Voila will make an entertaining show for all the participants.
